We’ll look at the most common arborvitae for privacy screens, Green Giant and Emerald Green, and a brand new option called the Green Screen arborvitae by Iseli. I’ll also show you how far apart to plant your trees for the fastest, densest hedge, whether you choose a straight line or staggered pattern.
If you want a lush wall of green in the shortest time possible, plant Green Giants in a double row, staggered pattern. By alternating trees between the rows, you close gaps more quickly, creating a thicker, more natural-looking hedge that blocks views year-round.

When it comes to planting a living privacy fence, three arborvitae varieties stand out: Green Giant, Emerald Green, and the new Green Screen. Each has unique traits that make it better suited for certain spaces.
👉 Tip: Watch my updated video below for side-by-side examples of these arborvitae and a closer look at the brand-new Green Screen.
Emerald Green Arborvitae seen here on the left and the Green Giant Arborvitae seen on the Right. These evergreen trees are great options for living fences and privacy screening. See my video above that I've created highlighting the differences between both trees so that you can select the best variety for your yard project. The spring and fall are perfect times to plant your arborvitae.
Here is a living privacy fence created with the use of Emerald Green Arborvitaes that have been clipped into a tight hedge. These trees were planted 15 years ago and were planted 3 feet apart on center. The Emerald Green Arborvitae is a great option for a city setting where the house lots are smaller as this variety grows more compact.
These Green Giant Arborvitae were planted 5 years ago as 4 foot trees and have grown significantly in a short amount of time. The staggered pattern will provide a great buffer between the street and the homeowners backyard. This planting is in a suburban neighborhood in a country setting with a large population of deer. These trees have been untouched by the deer and are growing beautifully.
