How to Plant Arborvitae for Privacy

We’ll look at the most common arborvitae for privacy screens, Green Giant and Emerald Green, and a brand new option called the Green Screen arborvitae by Iseli. I’ll also show you how far apart to plant your trees for the fastest, densest hedge, whether you choose a straight line or staggered pattern.

Create a Living Wall for Privacy

If you want a lush wall of green in the shortest time possible, plant Green Giants in a double row, staggered pattern. By alternating trees between the rows, you close gaps more quickly, creating a thicker, more natural-looking hedge that blocks views year-round.

Green Giant vs. Emerald Green vs. Green Screen: Which Arborvitae Is Best for Privacy?

When it comes to planting a living privacy fence, three arborvitae varieties stand out: Green Giant, Emerald Green, and the new Green Screen. Each has unique traits that make it better suited for certain spaces.

Size & Growth Rate

  • Green Giant Arborvitae (Thuja standishii x plicata ‘Green Giant’): A fast grower, adding 3–5 feet per year under ideal conditions. Mature size reaches 25–40 feet tall with a 12–15 foot spread.

  • Emerald Green Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis ‘Emerald Green’): Slower growing, about 6–9 inches per year, topping out at 12–15 feet tall with a narrow 3–4 foot spread.

  • Green Screen Arborvitae (Thuja ‘Green Screen’): A newer introduction from Iseli. More compact than Green Giant, but still vigorous. Grows about 12" per year, reaching  Garden Size: 10’H x 3’W with a narrower habit—perfect if Green Giant feels too large for your yard.

Appearance

  • Green Giant: Broad, pyramidal form with coarse green foliage.

  • Emerald Green: Slim, formal look with dense, bright foliage.

  • Green Screen: Looks like a scaled-down Green Giant—dense, uniform, and highly versatile.

Hardiness

  • Green Giant: Zones 5–8, heat and drought tolerant.

  • Emerald Green: Zones 3–8, cold hardy but less tolerant of humidity.

  • Green Screen: Zones 5–8, bred for strong performance and resilience.

Deer Resistance

  • Green Giant: Excellent resistance—rarely browsed.

  • Emerald Green: Often damaged by deer browsing.

  • Green Screen: Like Green Giant, it shows very good deer resistance, making it reliable in deer-heavy areas.

Best Uses

  • Green Giant: Large landscapes, fast privacy screens, windbreaks.

  • Emerald Green: Small yards, narrow borders, foundation plantings.

  • Green Screen: Small yards, narrow borders.

Green Giant & Emerald Green Arborvitae See Them Used in Different Yards!

Emerald Green Arborvitae and Green Giant Arborvitae

See my video above that I've created highlighting the differences between both trees so that you can select the best variety for your yard project. The spring and fall are perfect times to plant your arborvitae.

Hedge of Emerald Green Arborvitae

Here is a living privacy fence created with the use of Emerald Green Arborvitaes that have been clipped into a tight hedge. These trees were planted 15 years ago and were planted 3 feet apart on center. The Emerald Green Arborvitae is a great option for a city setting where the house lots are smaller as this variety grows more compact.

Green Giant Arborvitae Privacy Fence

These Green Giant Arborvitae were planted 5 years ago as 4 foot trees and have grown significantly in a short amount of time. The staggered pattern will provide a great buffer between the street and the homeowners backyard. This planting is in a suburban neighborhood in a country setting with a large population of deer. These trees have been untouched by the deer and are growing beautifully.
